Calling attention to the fact that Turkey's textile exports rose 7-8% last year, Uzun emphasised that the role of yarn in this growth was also key.

Investment Thrust

ANADOLU Yarn and Textile Factories has founded the yarn factory with the newest technology in Europe in Çerkezköy. With this factory covering 80.000 m2 and with an indoor space of 55.000 m2, the raw material, intermediate product and final product production capacity of Anadolu Yarn in nylon yarn has reached 70.000 tonnes per annum and in cotton 13.500 tonnes per annum.

Having begun producing in the factory 25% of chips, which is the raw material of nylon yarns, used by Turkey (which imports chips worth €300 Million every year), Anadolu Yarn has also begun providing this raw material to a variety of sectors from packaging to major appliances, from carpets to the automotive industry. With a current production of 23.000 tonnes as of now, the firm has begun the work for exports as well. Stating that their company has made a total investment of $75 Million in recent times including this factory, Anadolu Yarn Chairman Tuncay Uzun said: 'We are happy to produce a product Turkey imports. Today, Anadolu Yarn produces all varieties of yarn, especially nylon yarn, offering products to all textile groups from active sportswear to socks, from underwear to combed cotton and carpets. By producing raw materials like chips ourselves that used to be imported, we complete rapid, quality and integrated production. Our goal is to export 50% of our raw material, semi-finished products and nylon yarn production.'

Saying that they opened an office in Italy and they were planning to sell products to the Far East through Sri Lanka, Uzun added: 'As of now, we are the firm that has the most modern technology in Europe. We produce a variety of yarn that even China cannot produce in the short-term. This is a great advantage, especially in exports. Anadolu Yarn stands apart from the unfruitful competition based solely on prices with large exporter countries such as China and India. Anadolu Yarn adds quality and value to Turkey's yarn exports. We make our investments within this scope. We will make Sri Lanka a logistics base. From there, we will sell to countries in the region. We also have plans to produce yarn there too.'

INVESTMENT THRUST

Calling attention to the fact that Turkey's textile exports rose 7-8% last year, Uzun emphasised that the role of yarn in this growth was also key. Uzun stated that in Turkey, the yarn industry was a market employing large numbers of the workforce and that in their newly-constructed factory in Çerkezköy, they employed 600 individuals. Uzun said that while building the new factory, he convinced his industrialist friends in different fields for new investment. Uzun continued his remarks: 'I visited many countries from Brazil to Japan before making this investment and examined similar investments. I thought once I begin production, I could use half of the product and sell the other half. In this context, I convinced my friends to invest too. For example, a friend of mine who is a major carpet producer made a new investment by purchasing from me.

In their new factory, Anadolu Yarn has also established a cogeneration facility to provide energy for all their production activities. It is this facility with a capacity of 13Mw that provide all the energy needed for production by the factory. Tuncay Uzun has also said that they built a hydroelectric power plant worth $15 Million in Malatya. Uzun has emphasised that Anadolu Yarn sold its products to domestic and international giants of the sector.

Funds

knocking at the door

Tuncay Uzun, one of the shareholders of Kemer Country, is also one of the owners of the Olivium Shopping Mall in Zeytinburnu...

Tuncay Uzun has said that Olivium was a successful investment. Stating that funds often knocked at their door, Uzun continued: 'Funds have an interest. I am from Malatya. Where I come from, people do not like selling things. My father does not like it either, but I disagree. I believe you can sell everything besides your toothbrush. If its value is met, we would sell the shopping mall too and make a new investment'.
